Google Pay
Google Pay is a digital wallet that lets consumers pay quickly and securely without entering card details on every purchase. It uses tokenized credentials and Google account authentication to reduce friction while protecting payment data.
Benefits of Google Pay
- Simplified experience: Pay in one or few steps using cards already stored in the customer’s Google account.
- Enhanced security: Uses network tokens instead of the full PAN whenever available, reducing exposure of sensitive data.
- Broad compatibility: Works on Android and the web with eligible Visa and Mastercard cards (subject to issuer and regional availability).
- Strong authentication: Leverages Google authentication (account, biometrics, or device lock) to confirm payment intent.
- Multi-platform integration: Enable Google Pay in Webcheckout and flows like microsites or payment links to keep a consistent experience.
How to integrate Google Pay in your business
- Set up Google Pay on your Placetopay account: Contact the operations team to enable this feature on your site.
- Access the integration: Google Pay is available in Webcheckout and options like microsites and payment links.
- Flexible processing:
- Process transactions using the network token provided by Google Pay when applicable.
- If the issuer does not support tokenization, you can process with the PAN provided by Google Pay under the corresponding policies.
- Additional benefit: If your customers already have cards saved in Google Pay, they can pay without re-entering data, boosting conversion.
Google Pay in iframes and WebViews
If Webcheckout is opened inside an iframe or a WebView, that context must meet additional conditions that depend on your integration:
Availability and payment errors
The availability check and the payment flow are separate stages:
- Availability check: Webcheckout queries Google with
isReadyToPayand only displays the button if the response is positive. Google documents that this check returnsfalsewhen the Android device does not meet the Google Play services and Android System WebView version requirements, and that it always returnsfalsein iOS WebViews. - Payment errors: a positive
isReadyToPayresponse does not guarantee that the payment will be completed. In our tests with an Android app without the WebView configuration, the Google Pay button was displayed and the flow failed when starting; it worked after applying the Android configuration. When the flow fails, the Google Pay payment is not completed and the payer can choose another method enabled in the session.
For mobile apps, the recommended option is to open Webcheckout in an in-app browser (Chrome Custom Tabs or SFSafariViewController) instead of a WebView. Learn more in Integration with mobile application.
